Under the leadership of Fergus Early, the Artistic Director of Green Candle Dance Company, the Green Candle Senior Dancers have been active for four years, taking part in a diverse range of events and opportunities around the London boroughs.

Green Candle's aim for the Senior Dancers is to provide the opportunity for older people in the local area to take part in regular exercise, enjoy gentle physical activity and develop their creativity! Exercises are designed to be fun and enjoyable with emphasis on maintaining and improving flexibility, balance, strength and motor skills. Each dance session includes a gentle body warm-up, followed by a more rigorous dance exercise, and concludes with a dance sequence. Different dance styles and genres of music are used to provide variety and encourage enthusiasm.

Senior Dancers News

December 2007

The winter term saw the Senior Dancers collaborate with The Hot Pots, Spare Tyre Theatre's older people's group, to create the pantomime 'Alice'. A unique take on the classic 'Alice in Wonderland', the pantomime looked at the adventures of Alice as she moves into retirement. It was performed to captivated audiences at Teatro Technis in Camden and in the theatre at our home, Oxford House.

Spring/Summer 2008

The  Senior Dancers performed in two major London events, taking 'Yellow Bird', a dance based on taking flight from everyday chores, to the Big Chair Dance in the Royal Festival Hall and 'Felicitacion' to The Big Opportunity, London's Launch of community involvement in the 2012 Olympics. Due to the enthusiasm with which the dance was received, they were asked back to perform at the Tower Hamlets Celebration of International Older People's Day. The Senior Dancers have now performed to over 1300 people this year alone.

Autumn 2008

The Senior Dancers performed alongside 100 school children, a live band and Kinetika Carnival Dancers in the opening of the Tower Hamlets Cultural Olympiad, 'Through The Arch of the Imagination'. The procession took place on Friday the 16th of September in Spitalfields Market Place, attracting crowds from surrounding offices and restaurants.

The Senior Dancers are now looking towards the new term where they will be working with Fergus Early on their current piece about trees and our relationship with them.
