JACK BE NIMBLE

A production & workshop programme for older people - National Tour Spring 2006

Following a sell-out tour of London and the South East in 2004, the production embarked on a seven week national tour from February 27th to 13th April 2006

‘Jack be nimble, Jack be quick

                                          Jack jump over the candlestick'

Jack Be Nimble is the story of Jack, a candle-maker, who is forced out of business but refuses to accept that life ends at 70. After a couple of false starts, Jack persuades his daughter and her husband to join him in a crazy scheme to bring light and life to older people through a sparkling concoction of tap-dance, song and live music.

Funny and sad, exuberant and tender, this is an intimate show, designed for performance in smaller theatres, art centres and day centres with an older audience in mind, but accessible to all.

  • Written and Choreographed by Fergus Early
  • Music by Alberto Ramon Paban
  • Design by Nina Ayres
  • Dancers: Fergus Early, Robert Nicholson, Kylie Sudds
  • Stage Manager: Chris Lurca

A workshop, open to older people, will accompany every show. Workshops are designed according to people’s ability and mobility levels and include gentle movement, working on general mobility of joints, tendons and muscles, working from themes from the show. Whatever the individual’s needs, the most important elements are fun, discovery, accessibility and creativity in a safe and relaxed environment. The workshop will be up to an hour depending on the abilities of the participants, but will be limited to 25 people per session.

"The artists displayed an eminent understanding of the physical and emotional needs of our residents. The content and quality of the work was excellent ...leaving us with a feeling of togetherness, warmth and elation which carried on throughout the day " –
Projects Officer, Sundial Centre, London

‘… All aspects of this performance were well devised, especially the clever use of props. On small resources with a tiny cast – this was excellent theatre' - Social services worker

‘We all admired and envied your dancing and suppleness, while your energetic delivery of dialogue and songs filled us with optimism'

– Day-care centre user
