Falling
About
explores some of the downs and ups of one woman's
life.
Ruby
is a person like the rest of us, with many failings, but as often
as she falls – physically, emotionally, spiritually - she finds
a way up again and it's her love of dance and movement that carries
her through. The production is a feast of different dance styles
– jitterbug, tap, contemporary dance and music styles old and new.
See Ruby progress from a baby learning that walking is falling,
through her turbulent teens in the rock and roll years; see her
in leopard skin in the 70s with the Dietrich clasic 'Falling in
Love Again', see her indulge in a fantasy Rogers/Astaire tap dance
and even make a zimmer frame sexy! Witty, moving and entertaining,
the show is in the tradition of Green Candle's amazing 20 year history
of designing productions to reach people in unlikely settings for
dance – day centre dining rooms, residential home lounges, hospital
wards, as well as small theatres and arts centres.
Falling
About will be touring from 26 October 2007
to 6 July 2008.
Green
Candle has a long history of dance with elderly people and has worked
in partnership with Age Concern, social services elderly teams,
in day care centres and sheltered housing settings. From
January 2006, the company has led a highly successful project for
Thames House (Nurse-led Rehabilitation Unit) at Mile End Hospital
in Tower Hamlets, comprising weekly seated dance sessions for older
patients recovering from illness, falls, surgery and physical injury.
The
cost for a single performance and workshop for participants or training
session for care workers is £200 in social care settings and
£350 for arts venues. The performance running time is 45 minutes
followed by a break and then a workshop/training session of 30 minutes
to 1 hour. We can also arrange additional workshops and training
sessions at a cost of £50.The performing area required is
4m x 4 m.

A
workshop, open to older people, will accompany every show. Workshops
are designed according to people’s ability and mobility levels
and include gentle movement, working on general mobility of joints,
tendons and muscles, working from themes from the show. Whatever
the individual’s needs, the most important elements are fun,
discovery, accessibility and creativity in a safe and relaxed environment.
The workshop will be up to an hour depending on the abilities of
the participants, but will be limited to 25 people per session.
